Waiting for the Bus

This month's virtual paintout is in beautiful Gothenburg, Sweden. There are so many interesting scenes there to paint but I decided to just launch in and sketch the first thing I found. It must have been cold there at the water's edge as everyone on the street was bundled up. This lady looked to me as if she has finished her shopping and is waiting for transportation back to the warmth of her home. I drew with the bamboo stick dipped in Chinese ink again and then painted with my new 12-tube introductory set of QoR paints. They didn't seem as intense as they were with my last sketch using them, but that is probably because I was using Hahnemuhle paper and it seems to let the colors sink in a bit.

  1. I really enjoy the wet, juicy and loose way you handle watercolors. I haven't decided which scene to do yet, but am going to do it my sketchbook again. I had one all picked out, and my husband saw it and said it was boring.... sigh... why do we listen to others?!

I should just do like you, open up the page and paint from the first area I see. (like that's going to happen any time soon, ha ha)

By the way, I just love the strong blue dropped in at the right, in and below the lion; it's such a lovely contrast to the warm reds/oranges.

    1. Thank you, Retta! I think it helps me to start out with ink because it's easier to use more intense colors. You already have two of your values, from the white of the paper to the darkest dark. The rest is just mid values and you can go wild with them! Don't listen to anyone else about your vision. It's not WHAT you paint; it's HOW you paint it.
