Statue on the Square

I am so inspired by the Island of Jersey! I loved the feel of this plaza scene, with some people sitting and chatting in the sunshine while other shoppers bustled by, and the modernistic statue adding its flair. It has an energy that feels very French, or as I imagine French energy would feel. :)

  1. Excellent capture of that energy, Janell. A quite lovely piece and I find myself wondering at the statue and what the other side is playing for an instrument. Of course, I could be wrong and that is not an accordian on the statue figure facing me...Still, I'm interested enough to want to see more! The milling people are perfect!

  3. Thank you both for your wonderful comments! Autumn, the forward facing musician was playing an accordion and I think the other visible one had a guitar. There appeared to be a third behind the accordion player. I would love to have walked behind it to check it out. :) Nan, I am thrilled that this painting gave you a wow moment. That gives me one too! Thanks!

  5. I love your painting of this scene, I like the colours and the movement. I live in Jersey and although I know this statue I hadn't really 'noticed' it properly before. It's taken your painting to make me look at it properly. If you like I can take a picture of the other side so you can see the third musician. I'll be going to see for myself anyway as I've no idea what it is!

  8. Thank you all so much for your lovely comments. Just when I think I'll never regain my watercolor skills, I manage to pull one off, yay! This painting was even in an article by BBC News posted online with an interview of Bill Guffey, leader of the Virtual Paintout Blog. 9. Jersey Em, you are so fortunate to live in such a picturesque place! I've been visiting other countries virtually for the past year but I have never seen one as beautiful as Jersey! I would paint every day if I lived there! I hope your visit to the statue in this scene doesn't leave you disappointed with my painting. :)

  10. I love your watercolour style, particularly in this painting. So soft and loose, capturing a moment in time but at the same time rigorous in the drawing of reality. I have just started doing VP in the last two months and have very much enjoyed your contributions.
